He’s got the hat and the boots, but he also plays a mean guitar and writes an even meaner tune. He has no problem bouncing around the country chasing adventure (or a girl), and is telling his different kind of cowboy tale with his self-described “Amerijuana Music,” bridging honest storytelling with songcraft inspired by country powerhouses Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Hayes Carll as much as Boyz II Men, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used. Halverson fell in thrall to music at an early age, receiving his first guitar while in middle school. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. These students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. What started out as a writing project among two college friends turned into a fully realized band untethered to genres, with an endlessly bright future. Composed of Nathan Dickerson on vocals and guitar, bassist Clayton Allender, drummer Ethan Wescott, and Karlie Dickerson on keys Motherfolk are not only bandmates, but best friends. The band’s close-knit relationship allows each member to be their most authentic self, leaving every ounce of their souls to be poured into each song and high-energy performance. Despite their light-hearted, groovy-rock sound Motherfolk is dedicated to creating a much deeper connection with their fans. They don’t shy away from the taboo, taking on heavy topics with a light heart. The results provide us with music you can dance to, whose impact is felt long after the song has ended. Arlie w/ Nordista Freeze + As Of Today
Globe Hall Presents Arlie with Nordista Freeze and As Of Today on Saturday, October 4th. Arlie is the primary alias of the post-indie singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, Nathaniel Banks. Born in Northern Virginia and now residing in Los Angeles, Banks launched Arlie out of Nashville in 2017, with the stated ethos of “making the kind of music he would actually listen to.” Arlie quickly gained traction on Spotify after releasing two DIY bedroom masterpieces, “big fat mouth,” and “did ya think.” He then signed with Atlantic Records, and rallied a group of four enthusiastic musicians for a high-voltage full-band live show, to complement the meticulously crafted recordings. In the wake of nationwide tours headlining clubs, as well as opening for COIN, Rostam, Cold War Kids, and Mt. Joy, with performances at Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, and Live on the Green, Arlie’s debut EP, “WAIT” (released fall 2018), became a staple for pre-pandemic indie fans. Arlie released his first full-length LP, Break the Curse, in June 2022, accompanied by a period of heavy touring, with performances at Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza and Shaky Knees Fest. Arlie’s approach to arranging and sculpting sounds in Logic is as integral to his artistic voice as his lyrics and delivery. Lyrically, he draws influence from literature, philosophy, mythology, religion, and dreams. Listening to Arlie feels like you’ve stumbled upon a lost cassette from a parallel universe or alternate timeline of the 1970’s; the recordings evoke a nostalgia for a time that never existed. Arlie’s sonic vision was born out of a lifelong love of rock and roll recordings from the 1950s and ‘60s, combined with an upbringing as a jazz saxophonist, formative experiences playing guitar in church bands, and a cheerfully rebellious disposition. Filter these sensibilities through the lens of 2010’s pitchfork-era indie, 2020’s bedroom psych-pop instincts, a training in classical music theory, and a few years in the Nashville songwriting scene, and you can begin to understand the origins of Arlie’s stylistic lane. Fast-forward to fall 2024, Arlie’s upcoming second album marks a comeback, after a year-long detox from touring and social media activity. Coming this Sept 28th, the beloved visionary returns in classic form with an a-side & b-side release, “new archetype” and “dogs of nashville.” Arlie’s next body of work is a continued evolution of the blueprint he first put forward on the WAIT EP. While his artistic maturation is apparent, one can sense a return to the vitality and scrappiness of those recordings that first captivated his audience. Reminiscent of a non-existent golden age, his snarl and wit and winking self-awareness are in dialogue with the crises and complexes of our present day, on both a personal and a societal level.
