Globe Hall Presents Pink Mountaintops: Peacock Pools Album Release Party with Ashley Shadow and The Crooked Rugs on Friday, May 6th — Since their 2004 self-titled debut, Pink Mountaintops have supplied an outlet for the more arcane fascinations of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean. On Peacock Pools—Pink Mountaintops’ first new music in eight years—the British Columbia-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist shares 12 songs sparked from his magpie-like curiosity for a wild expanse of cultural artifacts: the sci-fi body horror of David Cronenberg, Disney Read-Along Records from the 1970s, early Pink Floyd and mid-career Gary Numan, John Carpenter movies, Ornette Coleman live videos, a 1991 essay on the cult of bodybuilding by postmodern feminist Camille Paglia. Featuring counterculture icons like Steven McDonald of Redd Kross and Dale Crover of Melvins, Peacock Pools alchemizes those obsessions into a body of work with its own enchanting power, the sonic equivalent of falling down a thousand rabbit holes at once and landing somewhere gloriously strange. Pink Mountaintops’ fifth full-length and debut release for ATO Records, Peacock Pools took shape from a batch of songs McBean first pieced together in the early days of the pandemic. “I’d moved into this cool little ’50s rancher house outside L.A. and was just mucking about in my bedroom studio, and pretty soon I started reaching out to some friends who were also shacked up and craving broadband sonic collaboration,” he recalls. Over the coming months, McBean began working remotely with a stacked lineup of musicians from the indie-rock and psych-pop and garage-punk worlds, including drummer/pianist Joshua Wells (Destroyer, Black Mountain), violinist/vocalist Laena Myers-Ionita (Feels, Death Valley Girls), drummer Ryan Jewell (Riley Walker, Steve Gunn), vocalist Emily Rose Epstein (Ty Segall, Emily Rose & The Rounders), and keyboardist Jeremy Schmidt (Black Mountain, Sinoia Caves). Produced by McBean and mixed in Vancouver by former Skinny Puppy member Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails), Peacock Pools also features several songs recorded live in L.A. with McDonald and Crover, ultimately forming Pink Mountaintops most eclectic and magnificently unpredictable album to date. Looking back on the album-making process, McBean points out that Peacock Pools offered a much-needed escape from the claustrophobia of pandemic life. “The fact that I could work from a distance with all these creative people who were also feeling obscured by clouds in this new world—I didn’t realize how much that connection keeps me balanced.” And with the release of Peacock Pools, McBean hopes to provide the audience with a similar sensation of expansiveness. “The thing I always have in my mind is that romantic idea of putting on a Walkman on a long bus ride and listening to something like Meat Is Murder in its entirety, then flipping it back and playing it all over again,” he says. “If I can take people on some sort of journey with a record, that’s always the main goal.”

However, this isn’t your parents’ rock ‘n’ roll. It’s got all of the style, swagger, and spirit of the seventies, but it’s lit up by a fresh fire. The Florida-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer exudes enough star power to pull off a cowboy hat and flare jeans (like some kind of lovable Quentin Tarantino outlaw), but he’s also definitely a byproduct of the times with a natural predilection for viral impact. He can pull off a rip-roaring guitar-laden bop or a home-fried country-style ballad just as seamlessly. Since bubbling out of Fort Myers in 2019, he’s notched a gold single and earned acclaim from Billboard, Wonderland, V Magazine, Notion, TMRW Magazine, American Songwriter, The Line Of Best Fit, Ones To Watch, This Song Is Sick, and Lyrical Lemonade, to name a few. Now, he fulfills his mission on his 2021 full-length debut album, The Sun Wakes Up Earlier Now [SB Projects/Republic Records]. BabyJake has kept trucking since the beginning though. He introduced himself with the gold-selling “Cigarettes on Patios,” crashing viral charts and piling up 100 million-plus streams. During 2020, he remained prolific with his debut EP, Don’t give me problems, give me wine. In its wake, Flaunt predicted, “BabyJake is on his way to superstardom.” Along the way, he collaborated with everyone from 24kgoldn to Dillon Francis and Louis The Child. In the middle of it all, he stared down one of his toughest challenges of his life thus far… “I got really sick with an auto-immune disease during COVID-19 ironically,” he admits. “I was in bed for three months, and I rethought everything I was doing. At the time, I had been making a project with mostly hip-hop and urban pop—because I love all kinds of music. However, I naturally lean more in the rock ‘n’ roll direction. It made me think. Life is really short. If you’re not doing what you love because you love it, why are you doing it? So, I built out the album with records that were true to me, getting into the space of alternative, rock, and southern ballads.” Regaining control of his health, he teased out the record with a series of raucous and rip-roaring tunes throughout 2021, including “Do I Fit In Your Shoes?,” “Funny Thing About Love” feat. Bipolar Sunshine, and “Daddy’s Coming Home.” Setting the stage for the album, the single “My Anxiety” glides along on clean guitar, warm keys, and an anxious beat as his grizzled intonation carries a hauntingly hypnotic hook, “I want to get high, do it quietly, do it privately…I don’t wanna die. I’ve got a lot on my mind.” “I was always really inspired by The Police’s ‘Every Breath You Take’,” he goes on. “Everyone thinks it’s a love song, but it’s also about a creep. I made my own stalker song.” With the raw instrumentation, straight-from-the-gut lyrics, and kind of street corner wisdom that passes from one generation to the next, BabyJake might just be the rockstar we’ve been waiting for.
