Griffin William Sherry (of The Ghost of Paul Revere) w/ Al Maul + Ronjo V
Globe Hall Presents Griffin William Sherry (of The Ghost of Paul Revere) with Al Maul and Ronjo V on Wednesday, July 9th. Hat hung low, hands wrapped around a well-worn acoustic guitar, Griffin William Sherry shares stories equally worthy of a dusty old novel, campfire congregation, or outdoor summer festival. For as much as the Maine singer, songwriter, and guitarist wrestles with big questions about life and love in his songs, he also celebrates the magic of spending his days living in a small town. His powerhouse vocal delivery, no-frills instrumentation, unabashed honesty, and eloquent songcraft might just make you appreciate the moment a little bit more. After twelve years fronting The Ghost of Paul Revere, he offers up his story as a solo artist for the first time on his 2024 full-length debut album, Hundred Mile Wilderness, and much more to come. “I’ve always found a lot of joy and pride in songwriting. I love writing earnest and witty lyrics, and songs that can tell a story,” he says. “I think fans of the Ghost (of Paul Revere) will find a familiar voice in this new record, but also a new direction. The songs on Hundred Mile Wilderness are built on that simple foundation of me and my guitar, singing at the top of my lungs with all my heart. That’s what I’ve been doing since day one. I feel like I’ve been given a great opportunity to continue making music and, for what feels like the first time, telling my story with my own voice.” When The Ghost of Paul Revere amicably parted ways in 2022, Griffin continued on his own. Armed with tunes of his own, he retreated to Nashville, TN and recorded Hundred Mile Wilderness with producer Eddie Spear. The title nodded to both his home state and the genesis of this next creative chapter. “The ‘Hundred Mile Wilderness’ ,” he notes. “Is an untouched stretch-of-wilderness at the northernmost end of the Appalachian Trail. To me, the journey to make this record paralleled exploring deep in the Maine woods . You know deep down there’s going to be an end to it, but you don’t know when you’ll reach it or what you’re going to experience along the way.” “I’m ready for a new chapter,” he says. “I don’t have a choice but to keep going; I have to make and play music. I had to make this record, which ultimately is both deeply personal and reflects where I call home, with all its failings and all its charm. I hope I’m always curious, just as I hope I’m always proud of where I’ve been and where I can go. And I hope that I never lose that drive to tell stories I can find myself in.” Ultimately, Griffin’s telling the story he’s meant to. Melissa Carper w/ Bonnie Montgomery + Amy Martin
KGNU Presents Melissa Carper with Bonnie Montgomery and Amy Martin on Sunday, June 15th. “I don’t think you can get this sound unless it’s borned in ya,” said bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, when asked about what he called “old-time mountain music.” When Melissa Carper heard those words, something jumped inside her. While staying in the country with a friend, she found an old DVD of Down From the Mountain, the documentary and concert film of the “O, Brother Where Art Thou” soundtrack that featured this particular Stanley interview. She immediately jotted down “borned in ya” on a piece of paper. “I knew I had to write that song,” she recalls. In the Spring of 2023, Carper went back to East Nashville’s Bomb Shelter — the same “analog wonderland” where she’d recorded Ramblin’ Soul and its predecessor, Daddy’s Country Gold, and enlisted the help of her trusted co-producers — Dennis Crouch and Andrija Tokic. “Borned In Ya” would become the title track of the new album. Like much of her writing, the song applies a homespun sensibility — and a bit of humor — to questions about life’s journeys. “I was turning over in my mind what it means to have something ‘borned in ya,'” she said. “The song evolved as I was writing it to be more about having your soul ‘borned it ya,’ and the more life experience you have, you hopefully grow to embody the highest version of yourself that you can be.” “Borned In Ya” could certainly stand as a reflection on Carper’s life in music. “Authentic” might be an overused word to describe an artist’s appeal, but there’s something so natural and true about Carper’s musicality that she must have been born with it: An easy sway to her singing, a precise, but laid back sense of timing. A feel. And, lyrically, she has an instinctive sense for storytelling, both observant and intuitive. Borned In Ya showcases Carper’s long-standing influences as well as her artistic growth and sense of adventure. The old-time jazz sounds we came to know on Daddy’s Country Gold are back in full force along with the R&B and Soul of Ramblin’ Soul. Perhaps, the least ‘country’ of her albums, the country roots are still felt as you can never remove the ‘hillbilly’ from Carper’s sound. In addition to her familiar blend of country with jazz, blues, soul, and R&B, the new album sees Carper exploring a more subtle and expert crossing of these genres and with a matured lyrical depth. The title track kicks things off with a gospel-style vocal chorus before settling into an impeccably funky groove. “Evil Eva” recalls the classic R&B of the 50s and 60s, and “Let’s Stay Single Together” puts Carper’s crooning vocal to a delightful jazz-tinged country soul feel. “There’ll Be Another One” sounds like classic Roy Orbison with Carper floating atop the bed of ever growing emotion, fueled by the stunning string arrangement from fiddler, Rebecca Patek. “Somewhere Between Texas and Tennessee” is straight out of the honky tonk and “Lucky Five” is reminiscent of an old Frank Sinatra swinger. Carper rounds out this album with covers of two classics, “That’s My Desire,” crossover jazz/country tune from the 30s, and a beautiful rendition of Cole Porter’s “Everytime We Say Goodbye.” “People call me retro or throwback, and I’ve been OK with that,” Carper says. “But, I feel like I’m still creating something new. I’m taking styles and blending things in a way that maybe hasn’t been done before. And, in the process, I’m evolving in my own way.” All ages, ticketed guests under 16 ONLY ADMITTED WITH TICKETED GUARDIAN 21+ All sales are final. Vandoliers w/ Adeem The Artist + Clementine Was Right
Globe Hall Presents Vandoliers with Adeem The Artist and Clementine Was Right on Saturday, June 21st. “Most personal album yet” is a well-worn cliché within the cliché-addled world of music promotion. But Life Behind Bars, the fifth studio album from beloved Texas country-punk ensemble Vandoliers, brings new meaning to that phrase. This album marks a series of firsts for the band, it’s their first release with upstart Break Maiden Records and distributed by storied indie Thirty Tigers, their first with Grammywinning producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly, Lucero), and their first recorded at the sprawling Sonic Ranch studios in West Texas. Most importantly, though, this collection of songs offers a window into frontwoman Jenni Rose’s journey through addiction and gender dysphoria — a journey that has culminated in her decision to come out as a trans woman while working in the macho worlds of Texas country and punk rock, at a moment when the rights of trans people are more intensely threatened by the day. For the uninitiated, even the most melancholy Vandoliers song has a degree of exuberance and verve, full of an irrepressible energy that has led the band to tour with everyone from Flogging Molly to the Turnpike Troubadours to fellow Dallas-Fort Worth natives the Toadies and the Old 97s. Their unique ability to bring together the worlds of the square-toed boot-clad hicks with the steel-toed boot wearing punks has helped the band find a devoted following across the world, fans who pack out shows that are always life-affirming and usually end with some Vandoliers hopping around onstage shirtless. While the 10 tracks on Life Behind Bars are upbeat and sing-a-long-ready in classic Vandoliers fashion, they’re a little more stripped down and intimate than the band’s typical raucous fare. The title track has all the sharp observations and catchy melodies of Vandoliers’ best work, but with the added context and depth of Rose’s path to self-discovery. The album has more explicitly political tracks as well: “Bible Belt,” which Rose wrote about the fear and pain of feeling like an outsider deep in the Fort Worth suburbs, and “Thoughts and Prayers,” a darkly funny composition written and sung by Graves about the epidemic of gun violence in America. These are the songs of a band that is fearless and fun, hellbent on spreading joy wherever they go, and who has made a career of pushing boundaries and taking all-comers — of making a bigger, brighter, bolder tent in a musical space that is still too often hidebound by tradition. “We’ve been breaking rules in country for 10 years,” says Rose. “‘You play too fast.’ ‘You’re too loud.’ ‘You’re more of a punk band.’ All that matters, though, is that people hear our songs and they help them in any way — that’s all we can hope for. I’m struggling so much on this record, but I hope that another person listens to it and finds something in it for themselves.” All ages, ticketed guests under 16 ONLY ADMITTED WITH TICKETED GUARDIAN 21+ All sales are final. The Droptines w/ Coyote Rose + Kansas Dawson
Globe Hall Presents The Droptines with Coyote Rose + Kansas Dawson on Saturday, August 30th. The Droptines are an alternative country band born in Concan, Texas. Established in 2019 by frontman/songwriter/musician, Conner Arthur, also known as “The King of Concan”. This band puts in the work taking none of the traditional or convenient routes when crafting songs. Blending a multitude of genres, while tethering each song together with a specific vernacular native to the Texas Hill Country, results in a broad range of authentic, versatile melodies. Add Conner’s rich voice and layered lyrics, and you have storytelling at its finest. From biblical themes, raunchy truths, and primitive questions to one’s existence, it is clear, Shakespeare has made his way to the trailer park. From the hard-hitting anthem “New Girl” to the heart wrenching melody “As Your Heart Breaks” to the opulent masterpiece “Raining Where You Are”, combined with a down to earth yet captivating stage presence, this band takes you on quite the ride. “Once every decade or so someone comes along, takes the bar and sets it way higher than any of us could dream of. Conner is the new gold standard of songwriting. He’s witty, visceral and ties it all up with an unshakable knack for melody. It’s an honor to be alive at the same time as this generational talent.” – David Beck “Conner‘s ability to write songs that meld raw emotion with detailed imagery is something I feel only few songwriters have. His songs make you think long after you’ve stopped listening, and the characters he writes about live in your mind forever.” – William Beckmann What is a Droptine you might ask? It’s a rare downward pointing antler found on a white tail deer, the one to watch for, and a nod to the environment and upbringing of the group. The Droptines are:Conner Arthur, front manDillon Sampson, bassDonny Parkinson, lead guitarJohnny Sheets, drumsTony Rincon, Pedal Steel These guys have enjoyed sharing a stage with many popular artists including Turnpike Troubadours, Chris Stapleton and Zach Bryan. Margo Cilker w/ Forrest VanTuyl + Kayla Katz
105.5 The Colorado Sound presents Margo Cilker with Forrest VanTuyl and Kayla Katz on Tuesday, June 3rd. Margo Cilker’s sophomore album, Valley of Heart’s Delight, refers to a place she can’t return: California’s Santa Clara Valley, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. In this 11-song follow-up to 2021’s critically acclaimed Pohorylle, family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs, at once precious and endangered, beautiful and exhausting. Cilker and Pohorylle producer Sera Cahoone brought most of that record’s highly-acclaimed crew (studio players for The Decemberists, Band Of Horses, and Beirut) back to the studio with additional contributions from acclaimed Northwest traditionalist Caleb Klauder. Valley of Heart’s Delight, Cilker’s second record on Portland, Oregon label Fluff & Gravy Records, has already racked up an impressive list of accolades and year-end picks and has paved the way for 2024’s extensive touring and festival appearances. Margo Cilker lives near the Columbia River in Goldendale, Washington with her husband, songwriter and working cowboy Forrest VanTuyl, as well their dog and some horses. An evening with Ingrid Andress
Globe Hall Presents an evening with Ingrid Andress on Thursday, April 3rd. When 4x GRAMMY nominee Ingrid Andress first wrote her new single “Footprints,” she had no intention of sharing it with the world. A stripped-back piano ballad penned for her younger siblings, the bittersweet but hopeful track drifts between self-aware confession and lovingly detailed storytelling as Andress offers up words of reassurance for making it through tough times. Her first new music since her 2022 sophomore LP Good Person (a highly acclaimed release featured on Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Albums of 2022” list), “Footprints” arrives after a whirlwind year for Andress, including a stint in rehab that profoundly altered her perspective on her career. “So much had changed in my life since I started out, but I’d never had the downtime to process any of it—I just let it build up to the point where I felt disoriented and lost,” she says. A longtime co-writer whose credits include hits like Charli XCX’s “Boys,” Andress made her widely celebrated debut with 2020’s Lady Like—a critically praised powerhouse that set the record for the highest-streaming debut album from a female country artist and earned three Grammy nominations, including Best Country Album and Best Country Song (for the double-platinum No. 1 radio hit “More Hearts Than Mine”). As she stepped back from the spotlight, Andress found herself called to a new level of boldness in her songwriting. Produced by her longtime collaborator Sam Ellis and adorned with warm Dobro tones and heavy-hearted strings, “Footprints” is the first glimpse at Andress’ forthcoming new music. As she gets set to share her most introspective work yet, Andress hopes to inspire others toward a state of unhurried self-reflection. Cristina Vane w/ Nic Clark Band + Dylan Hurwich
Globe Hall Presents Cristina Vane with Nic Clark Band and Dylan Hurwich on Friday, May 2nd. More than a mere practitioner of her craft, Cristina Vane has a breadth and depth of serious musical skill compiled from countless miles across all kinds of geography. On her third studio album ‘Hear My Call,’ the pairing of a lifetime pursuit and growing treasure trove of songs makes for a record that demands to be heard.
